Stable & Level Surface For Carrying Gear & Sleeping Inside Your Bronco

A common complaint amongst Bronco owners is the hump in the cargo space when the rear seats are folded down. The first thing I did when I got the Bronco home was make a DIY leveling platform for the back so I could sleep back there while waiting for my roof rack to arrive.

But it isn’t only annoying for people who want to sleep in their Broncos. When you are trying to haul larger items that don’t fit in the rear cargo area alone, then this nearly 3″ hump can make it difficult to pack things in the Bronco. For example, I had all my camping gear in 95L Roam rugged cases. Because of how long they are, they would teeter on this hump.

While the DIY solution worked, there is a much simpler and higher-quality solution for those wanting to get rid of the hump in the cargo area.

Product Overview

The leveling platform from BamBeds comes in two types of wood. You can get the birch platform which is $450, or the bamboo platform which comes in at $650. They are precision cut to fit perfectly in the Bronco and have rounded edges for a more comfortable feel when handling them. The clearance is tight on these as well. The joints are a very tight fit and you will have to press them in, but that means there is no rattling at all from the platform and no chance of it shaking apart.

The system will give you 2.1″ of storage underneath as well. For me, this is where I choose to store stuff like my axe, folding saw, and some tools. There are also handles on the sides of the platform which gives you the ability to still utilize the D rings that are in the rear cargo area of the Bronco.

Installation

The platform comes in four pieces and requires no tools at all to install. Two pieces will run in parallel with the Bronco, and then the two platform pieces will press onto those pieces. And that is it. The installation is complete. This is one of the easiest installs I have ever done and took me about five minutes to complete, which included unboxing and cleanup.

Initial Thoughts

This is a very well-designed and well-constructed product. The clearances are tight which means that even though this is a four-piece kit, it feels like a single-piece unit once it is assembled. It is also incredibly easy to install and just as easy to uninstall in case you need to take it out for whatever reason.

It is perfectly flush with the rear seats when they are folded down as well. This means there is no teetering of boxes like I spoke about earlier, and really no concern at all when you need to haul something. This also means that if you want to sleep in the back of the Bronco, it is now a level surface to be able to do so.

Short Falls

As with any product, there are some things that I would like to see addressed. First is that with this installed, you do not have access to the jack and other tire-changing equipment. Easy enough to get to it if not is on the platform, but if there is, it would make more difficult to get to the jack. This will happen in any case that you’re storing something in the back.

The other thing is that it is a pretty slick surface. I don’t have much of an issue when I am fully loaded for camping, but if I go out to wheel for the day, then my tools and recovery bag are sliding all over the place. I think a carpeted option would be awesome and make this platform almost perfect.

Final Thoughts

The “short falls” that I see in this platform would not prevent me from buying this product. It is a beautifully made and high-quality item with an excellent fit and finish. The platform does what you need it to do by leveling the cargo area, but also provides some storage area underneath for things like axes and tools. The fact that you are able to install and uninstall this in less than a minute is also really awesome. Throw it in when you need it, and remove it quickly if you don’t need it.
